Can You Still Use The GTA San Andreas Hot Coffee Mod?

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was probably the best title released on the PlayStation 2. However, the game didn’t come without controversy and for the GTA franchise, it saw the most controversy a Grand Theft Auto game has ever had… We’re talking of course about the Hot Coffee mod. Which begs the question can you still use the GTA San Andreas Hot Coffee mod?

What is the GTA San Andreas Hot Coffee mod?

Hot Coffee was originally planned to feature in San Andreas. But, it was axed during development due to issues with the age rating of the game. In Hot Coffee, the player took control of the protagonist, Carl Johnson in one of his most… ahem, intimate moments. It was basically a simulated sexual intercourse mini game. The player could start the mini game with one of the many girlfriends available throughout the game.

It became an inside joke between the developers and wasn’t meant to be accessible due to the graphic nature. Despite this, in 2005, the Hot Coffee mod was developed by players. Using code left in the game on the Microsoft Windows port, players found a way in. Which eventually meant PlayStation and Xbox users got their hands on it too.

The name of the mod, Hot Coffee, comes from a line of dialogue from CJs girlfriend after a date. She would always ask would ask “Do you want to come inside for some coffee?”

What did Rockstar Games do about the Hot Coffee mod?

When the content first came to light, Rockstar tried to shift the blame to hackers, saying it was entirely a third-party creation in a statement:
Hackers created the Hot Coffee modification by disassembling and then combining, recompiling and altering the game’s source code.
However, Rockstars claims were later countered when it was shown that the mod was accessible through pre-existing code.

Most recently a mod of a similar nature was made for Rockstars most recent release, Red Dead Redemption 2. Though, rather than unlocking code hidden in the game files, it uses game assets such as existing game animations to create the content.

While Rockstar asked the modder to remove their content and was met with refusal, given how much trouble San Andreas brought to their door, its doubtful Rockstar is happy to see the resurgence of Hot Coffee.
