Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time – What We Know So Far

This time last month, Activision dropped a surprise gameplay trailer that got everyone talking. It was for the fourth instalment of the beloved Crash Bandicoot series, with this one being a direct sequel to 1998’s Crash Bandicoot: Warped. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is set to be released this October, so here’s everything we know so far!

It’s About, Well, Time!

As the title suggests, the story revolves around time. This isn’t new territory for Crash though. Previous games have seen him jump and spin across all sorts of different worlds and eras. The emphasis in 4 is the new ability to control and slow down time. The gameplay trailer shows areas that are impossible to pass due to super-fast enemies, but Crash’s new skill puts them into slow motion so he can pass safely.  We’re sure there’ll be some interesting puzzles and boss fights with this new feature and we can’t wait to see them!

Familiar Faces

It wouldn’t be a Crash game without a colourful array of characters! Unsurprisingly, Crash will be joined once again by beloved friends and foes! Players will not only play as Crash, but also Doctor Neo Cortex and Coco. Other familiar faces such as Doctor N. Gin can also be spotted in the trailer, but whether other old favourites will make an appearance is as of yet unknown.

New Faces… Literally!

Although Aku Aku and Uka Uka are nowhere to be seen in this trailer, new floating faces make an appearance. One of these iconic masks grants Crash the ability to slow time down, whilst the other allows him to switch gravity and walk on the ceiling. As well as new friends, there are plenty of new enemies in this trailer too, big and small.

Back to Basics

Thankfully, not a whole lot seems to have changed from the classic Crash gameplay formula that we know and love. Gameplay alternates between side-scrolling platforming and third person platforming. Objective-wise, it still seems to be the case of making it from one end of the map to the other, smashing as many boxes and collecting as many apples as possible. Crash still uses his iconic spin move to blast enemies off the screen whilst other enemies he stays completely clear of. No doubt, this loyalty to the original games will be a relief for fans!

New Worlds

Although faithful to the original in terms of aesthetic and gameplay, that’s not to say there isn’t new territory to be explored. Gameplay demos have revealed gorgeous new locations with updated graphics, a step above the N. Sane Trilogy remasters. Crash Bandicoot 4 sees levels take place in jungles, frozen worlds, pirate coves, futuristic cities, sea-scapes and prehistoric volcanic lands. We can’t wait to explore these locations!
