Cyberpunk 2077 Release: Night City Wire Recap

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been hotly anticipating any new information regarding the release of CD Projekt RED’s upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077. Well, we’re in luck! Because the studio is releasing an episodic series detailing the various systems, gangs and areas you’ll be exploring in game. The first episode is already out, and there’s a lot to unpack!

You can watch the first episode here:

Braindancing

So this episode covered a few areas, including Braindance – a kind of VR in which you live another person’s experiences. As well as seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, and smelling what they smell, you’ll also be able to review the scene from an outside perspective. You’ll be able to float around independently of the “roller” (that’s whoever took the video in the first place) zoom in, fast-forward, rewind, even scan weapons and eavesdrop on things the equipment picked up that the roller didn’t hear. If the roller is using the right implants, you’ll be able to see heat signatures, and read people’s vital signs, a little like Batman’s Detective Vision in the Arkham series.

In the game it’ll be used as a storytelling tool, according to Patrick Mills, the lead quest designer at CD Projekt RED. You’ll be able to use it to find clues towards objectives, but also to explore the religions and philosophies of the people you otherwise might not get to know. A kind of day in the life for your average Night City resident, if you will.

The technology was originally developed for therapeutic uses and rehabilitation. However, the world of Cyberpunk being what it is, it was quickly adapted to view movies, video games, and obviously… other forms of entertainment. The devs also referred to “Black BDs”, a type of Braindance in which the roller, for instance, dies. These Black BDs are in high demand among people who want to feel death, but don’t get to respawn. Dark.

The Badlands and The Mox

There are 6 districts in Night City, and they’re all wrapped up in the dry, desert-like region known as the Badlands. Visually, it’s reminiscent of Mad Max, with its dusty roads and arid, sandy plains. The Badlands are the home of the Nomads, a group of roaming vagabonds who scavenge the desert for spare parts.

The Mox are one of many gangs in Night City, and maybe the first we’ll be interacting with in the prologue of the game. They were set up in 2076 after the death of Lizzie Borden, a strip club owner who defended her employees from violent clients. The gang upholds the same value, aiming to protect ‘adult workers’ from the dangers they’re likely to face.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners

CD Projekt RED, along with Studio Trigger, are producing an anime series set in the Cyberpunk world. This will come with new characters and a standalone story. Studio Trigger, the team behind Kill la Kill and Darling In The Franxx, are famous for their spectacular visuals. So paired with the high-neon setting, this will definitely be one to keep an eye on. It’s set to release in 2022, so synchronise your watches.

Cyberpunk 2077 Release: What else?

It’s important to know that everything in the trailer takes place in the prologue! Roughly the first four hours of the game, according to post-show host Jesse Cox. We already knew the game was about recovering some sort of tech that holds the key to immortality. Well, now we know who’s meant to have it – Arasaka! One of the biggest corporations in the world, mainly dealing in security, legal services, weapons and vehicles.

We also saw Adam Smasher, the full-cyborg metal monster who killed Johnny Silverhand in the original Cyberpunk lore. He’s over 7 feet tall, practically all cyberware, and a brutal beast. Oh, and he’s an Arasaka loyalist. Good luck getting that immortality chip with this guy in the way, you might need it.

Other than all that, PS5 owners will also be getting a free upgrade if they own the game on PS4! Anyone with a PS4 copy will also be able to play it on PS5! They will also receive a free update to improve the game’s visuals on Sony’s next-gen console. Furthermore, Cyberpunk 2077’s PS4 version will be immediately playable on PlayStation 5 as soon as the game launches! Cyberpunk’s 2077 Release can’t come soon enough!
