How The Fishing Mechanic Differs Between Our Favourite Games
The fishing mechanic has become somewhat a staple for some of the most popular games we’ve come to love. Fishing has many different uses across a variety of genres. Let’s take a look at how fishing works in the following games!
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
It’s not rocket science that fishing is one of ACNH’s most prevalent activities in the game. Just like catching insects or gathering farming fruits, it’s an essential task you undertake regularly so that you can sell fish, donate them to your museum, or even display them in your own house. The overall fishing mechanics are fairly simple, which is what makes it so therapeutic. The fact that you can literally see the fish’s shadow means that you can catch fish quickly whilst traversing your island. I personally love the fact that you can find new species throughout the year and learn about them from Blathers!
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Breath of the Wild’s vast open world, with its many different landscapes and climates means different species are spread out across the map. You’ll find specific types of fish in different areas of Hyrule and that’s a small contribution to the many things that make this game that bit more realistic. Learning that this game didn’t adhere to the traditional fishing mechanics we have come to know in the Zelda series disheartened me slightly. I did miss the good old fishing-rod! But that did not stop players from discovering new ways to fish, such as detonating bombs or shooting shock arrows in the water for efficient material gathering! You can fish to sell, cook or upgrade weapons, making it super worth it most of the time. But if you’re feeling lazy, have enough rupees and find it convenient, you can purchase fish from merchants every so often!
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Another Zelda game on this list but certainly a different one to the previous! Link’s Awakening adopts fishing in the form of a mini-game, where the player can fish to earn various items like Pieces of Heart, lures and of course, rupees! The item you get depends on the fish you catch. It’s a fun little mini-game to return to throughout the game, where new fish can be found each time you play, but it’s catching the large fish at the very bottom that can be the most tedious thing for you completionists out there!
Hades
The indie rogue-like that took the spotlight in 2020 incorporated fishing as a form of chance as opposed to something you can do any time. As you make your way through the chambers of the Underworld, finding a fishing spot is very rare for the most part. The species you obtain depends on the region you are in. They can be the Head Chef at the House of Hades whenever you die during a run. The value of each fish differs depending on the species. Each species rewards you with various treasures you need throughout the game such as Gemstones, Darkness or Chthonic Keys. This heavily luck-based mechanic certainly makes you appreciate fishing so much more!
