Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2: What’s New?

1999! It’s been a whole twenty-one years since the release of the first seminal instalment of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. Now, by popular demand and to the delight of nostalgia-heads everywhere, the first two games are being remastered and scheduled for release on September 4th. Here’s the lowdown on what you can expect to see that’s new and old.

Skaters

Thankfully, plenty of classic characters will be making a welcome return to the remaster. It goes without saying, Tony Hawk will make a playable appearance. Along with Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek, Chad Muska, Andrew Reynolds, and other favourites. New appearances, come in the form of Evan Smith, Eric Koston, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Riley Hawk and hopefully many more. We’re sure that, true to the originals, there will be plenty of unlockable characters, fictional or real for us to play as.

Soundtrack

What would a Tony Hawk game be without a killer soundtrack? By the looks of things, the remaster is shaping up to be an audible homage to the originals. Whilst also introducing some new bangers. There will be classic tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, Dead Kennedys, Rage Against the Machine, Suicidal Tendencies and Papa Roach. As well as tracks by Machine Gun Kelly, A. Swayze & the Ghosts, Skepta and many more. Hopefully, there’ll be an option to play your own music in-system whilst skating to increase variety. Who do you want to hear on the new soundtrack?

Locations

Iconic locations will, without a doubt be making a comeback in this current-gen remaster. Confirmed maps include the memorable street-skate heavy Downtown, big ramp style Hanger, and the versatile School 2. It’s a safe bet that there’ll be a few new maps to explore, but where they’ll be is as of yet unknown. Given to current popular wave of nostalgia, will we see some 90’s Rodney Mullen-era beaches or perhaps some Bam Margera-era CKY-infused urban areas? What would you like to see?

Gameplay

Like all remasters, fundamentally, nothing really changes with the core basics of the gameplay. From the trailers, it’s looking unlikely that anything in the way the game plays is actually different. Objectives are combo-heavy, and realism is taking a backseat to the likes of the Skate series, which in themselves are also extremely unrealistic. This is great news for anyone looking for a nostalgia trip! The only main difference of course is the heavily updated graphics! Despite the absurd arcade style gameplay, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is looking far more realistic than ever.
