Out of all the games that are releasing this year, there’s no doubt the most anticipated one is Cyberpunk 2077. Based on the universe of the pen and paper RPG Cyberpunk 2020 made by Mike Pondsmith, revered developer CD Projekt Red is on the tip of every gamer’s tongue these days.
There have been a number of trailers, interviews and reveals, including an on-stage appearance by Keanu “You’re Breathtaking” Reeves so there’s a lot that we do know already. With an imminent Night City livestream later this month, let’s recap what we know about Cyberpunk 2077 so far.
Wearing the shoes of Cyberpunk 2077’s protagonist, called V, you’ll be adventuring through the neon-spangled streets of Night City. According to reports, it will be a massive map, consisting of 6 districts with barely a loading screen in sight. Through some impressive crowd-generating technology, CDPR has managed to fill the city’s streets with characters of all shapes and sizes. Beyond just nameless NPCs walking aimlessly, a lot of the times they will be doing something from dancing to getting into fights to committing crimes.
Every self-respecting cyberpunk story has to involve the dystopian fantasy of being whoever you want to be. Cyberpunk 2077 will deliver in this area as well. Starting from the character creator, you’ll be able to craft V in any way you desire from picking his gender to designing his…southward equipment. CDPR has explained that sexuality is a big component of Cyberpunk 2077 and that ranges from the way you’ll want to design your character all the way to who you romance.
Cyberpunk 2077 will also include a variety of ways to tackle situations, both inside and outside of combat. As the game shares a lot in common with the Deus Ex series, including a first-person perspective, gamers clamored for the ability to do pacifist runs. CDPR has taken that on board and has stated that all weapons will have a non-lethal setting. Dialogue will also offer up at least 3-4 options per interaction opening up the avenues for composing your character’s personality within the game’s world. Aside from the usual stats like strength and intelligence, there will also be a Cool stat that determines your character’s performance under pressure, such as aim when taking heavy fire.
When asked about the possibility of microtransaction, CDPR has been adamant about how they want Cyberpunk 2077 to be like The Witcher 3; a complete game experience without nickel and diming. They’ve even subtly mocked the idea of a single-player game having microtransactions in one of their trailers.
On top of all this information, we know that Keanu is going to have a prominent role inside V’s head. There will also be a character played by Grimes and a cameo by Mike Pondsmith. This is what we know about Cyberpunk 2077 so far. Let’s hope there’s more juice to dispense during the June 24th Night City Wire.
