Genshin Impact Beginners Guide: the power of Synergy!

As in the most exquisite sweet and sour Anime tradition, true power comes from believing in your friends! Genshin Impact is certainly no exception, and projects the player in an idyllic and very waifu-infested world. Indeed, a most classic “I need to find my brother/sister!” quest, in which plenty of friendly and not so friendly faces, stockings-clad legs and mammary glands of all kinds will pave the way to a memorable adventure. Here’s our Genshin Impact beginners guide to show you what you’re missing out on!

And it is free to play, of course, unless you get carried away and start purchasing weapons the size of a Bentley to impress your friends and most importantly, yourself.

Along the way, the player will meet a number of characters willing to join the party. Scantily covering outfits and bubbly personalities, though, are not the sole reasons upon which you should choose your setup. Every party member has unique strengths, weaknesses and ways to balance those with the help of the other nakamas. And guess what, it is up to you, the player, to develop your characters and obtain your dream tsundere party.

Elements, Reactions and Resonance

Hey, this is a fantasy action JRPG. Look, there’s elemental magic! But in Genshin Impact, elemental magic/skills are not for direct damage only. Testosterone and other rage-inducing reasons might drive inexperienced players to choose and spam straight away, only damaging skills and abilities. However, as all RPG veterans can easily confirm, no party should ever lack a support member with Electro-Charged or Super Conduct abilities to boost the party’s damage and weaken the enemy. THAT MEANS MORE DEE PEE ESS, that’s right.

And of course, there will be the classic elements. Anemo (Wind), Geo (Earth), Electro (Lightning), Dendro (Nature), Pyro (Fire) and Cryo (Ice) to choose from and get stronger at through epic battles and even more epic grinding.

All elements, to a variant degree, have damaging, support and healing spells/abilities. And they can be stacked and mixed for increased effect! For example, Electro + Hydro will deal electric damage over time, whereas stacking the same element will result in a Resonance effect that will improve and deepen the effects of a single spell.

So why it is important to develop your characters in a balanced way? You can control one character at a time, but you can switch to any other very quickly and stack spells and abilities for visually pleasing and incredibly effective results.

Energy

Genshin Impact uses an energy system to dispense your abilities. Energy is generated by inflicting or taking damage, using skills and magic and all the nice things you can do in the middle of a life and death battle situation. And, for the joy of grinders, enemies release energy orbs upon their demise! A great help to top your levels up and grind some more, especially late at night. Oh, and do not forget there are energy-specific orbs that will top up only a given Element.

Of course, Resonance rules also apply to energy. Cycling and stacking energy orbs of different kinds will produce several interesting effects.

Four’s Company, Too.

Anyone who’s even smelled an RPG once during early childhood knows very well how important it is to have party members with different roles. Hybrids are also nice. But the thumb rule of “Jack of All Trades and Master of None” also applies in full strength here.

As previously hinted, there are three class types:

DPS, which stands for Damage Per Second, who, surprise surprise, deal painful and sore damage, through a vastitude of melee and elemental attacks. Generally speaking, DPS characters are the most fragile. However, there are ways to make them tougher at the expense of some damage. With one DPS only, it is advisable to keep him or her focussed on damage dealing only. The other party members will deliver all the needed support and healing. With two DPS, one might be built to have thicker skin and be able to take a bit more hits before dissolving in a sparkly unicorn flatulence.

Support characters split into three sectors that can be mixed: Elemental Reaction, Support DPS and Energy Generation. Some good results can be obtained by having two party members with unique and mixed specialisations. Some experience is required in order to learn all the interactions, but results can be very satisfying.

And (always) last, the Healers. Usually preferred by older individuals who learned the importance of compassion and can take a very high dose of bossing around by squeaky, raging teenagers. Everyone will agree though, that without healing you won’t be going anywhere. You can’t fight if you’re dead, right? Anemo is the element of choice, albeit not the only one, for great healing.

Choosing Members

Genshin Impact is so exquisitely PVE. Player Versus Environment. It is possible to play the game without interacting with other humans and fully enjoy it. Players who love to follow a heart-throbbing story with plot twists and endless sibling searches will find the game extremely enticing. With this type of game comes freedom, sweet freedom. To choose whichever characters and combinations you fancy, without being lectured by that very expert player who always knows more than you and simply calls your characters “toons”, vaporising the magic and the involvement of role playing in one fell swoop. As explained, there are some rules to observe in order not to result in a meaningless seppuku mission.

Ultimately it is up to the player to evolve and develop in any desired way. This is the reason why this Genshin Impact beginners guide will not recommend a particular setup, and will leave you to choose the characters you feel more comfortable with and make them interact in this heck of a well made cel-shaded adventure. You have the power to win and to suck, and no one will be goading. Win-win!
