Soon after dropping the announcement trailer in June, gaming titans Kojima Productions have elaborated on the re-release that promises to deliver (pun intended). Set to release its “Director’s Cut” edition on September 24th is Hideo Kojima’s passion project Death Stranding. Here, we take a look at what’s new.
Unfortunately, for those without a PS5, brave enough to undertake the addictively arduous trek across America again, Death Stranding Director’s Cut is currently only planned for a PS5 release. It’s great news if you’re fortunate enough to secure one of these consoles, but not so much for those without. At least it’ll undoubtedly look fantastic in all its fully remastered glory. The experience will no doubt be enhanced by the resistant controller triggers, frighteningly fast load times and upscaled 4K, 60FPS display. Thankfully, Playstation confirmed that save data will be transferable, so you don’t have to start the game all over again! If you already own the PS4 digital version, you can buy the Deluxe Edition Upgrade for a mere $10. That’s how it should be done!
Hailed as the “definitive experience”, the Pre-order Trailer which dropped on July 8th, reveals further infinitely unusual narrative. It’s also confirmed that the Director’s Cut will introduce new environments and locations, promising new story missions,. One of the most stylish and excitingly old-school is the firing range, shown off in the trailer as a vast digital hallway, home to an array of weaponry, much of which we’re sure will be new. Despite the original boasting an impressive limitlessness of missions and options to make missions more varied what with route planning, delivery methods and random elements to consider like ambushes, weather and BT’s, the fact that even more is being added is extremely exciting news. The question is, will it help to demystify the mysteries we need answering, or only convolute them? Either way, I’m in.
Critics of the first game targeted what many gamers loved about the journey to rescue America; the repetition of it all. Gradually, after building rapport with your clients, you unlock extra methods of aid for expeditions. This could be in the form of weapons, vehicles, climbing aids, gadgets and more. The trailer demonstrates a selection of what’s new: the Cargo Catapult (to strategically projectile launch containers), the Buddy Bot (a two-legged robo-friend capable of carrying cargo), the self-explanatory Jump Ramp (for all your Evil Knievel desires), among others. Deliveries aren’t the only thing getting some TLC. Combat also is receiving some major upgrades, including mounted machine guns, a maser gun, and some WWE-esque looking melee upgrades. Sam Bridges can now flying jump kick MULES. Awesome.
Remember the “Princess Beach” line that led many gamers to fits of laughter, outcries of rage, or sheer, unrivalled love for Death Stranding? Kojima Productions weren’t done with the Mario references just yet. Introducing, Fragile Circuit! Okay, it’s not an explicit Mario Kart reference, but certainly, the last thing expected from the Director’s Cut. The studio must have seen the numerous videos online of players constructing their own ski slopes amidst the mountains of America (perfectly suitable behaviour for a man with the fate of mankind in his hands who also happens to be carrying a newborn baby), and thought they would one-up them. Fragile Circuit looks like a single racecourse with an array of flashy vehicles at hand to whizz around, competing against ghost versions of yourself in time trials. Because why not?
