The most recent Elder Scrolls release was Skyrim in 2011 and, since then, Bethesda has been keeping quiet about the next game in the series, Elder Scrolls 6. While they haven’t announced a release date, we do know it’s going to be released after Starfield, the space-based RPG that the studio is currently working on. So don’t expect to be playing it any time soon!
If you’ve been wondering about where the game is set, you’re not the only one. Nothing is confirmed yet, but speculation has been fuelled by the landmarks visible in the trailer shown at E3 2018.
Some think it’ll be in Hammerfell, due to the similarities between some mountains shown in the trailer and some seen in Elder Scrolls Online. Some say the biggest places we haven’t been are Valenwood, Black Marsh and Elsweyr, so we might wind up there. The most hopeful suggest we may have access to multiple provinces across Tamriel. With the development period Bethesda seem to have in mind, it’s not impossible to imagine!
Well, we know it’s using the Creation engine – the game engine used in Skyrim and Oblivion – or at least some version of it. Here’s Todd Howard’s take on the engine situation:
“There are lots of pieces [to an engine], and with every game parts of that change. Whether it’s the render, the animation system, the scripting, the AI, the controls”
So it’ll be the same engine in name, just maybe not as we know it. There’s an argument to be made that this isn’t a bad move, because a brand new engine is far more likely to have bugs than one that’s been tried and tested. Then again, Skyrim didn’t use a new engine, and the game was practically notorious for its bugs.
As of right now, we think The Elder Scrolls 6 will be released during the lifecycle of the PS5 and X-Box Series X. However, nothing is guaranteed. It’s clearly still very early days, and as such, there’s not a lot of info out there.
