It’s official! After 20 years, Pokémon Snap is making a return on the Nintendo Switch! The on rails Pokémon photography game was a pretty big hit for the Nintendo 64 and from the look of the footage so far, we are in for a real treat!
The classic Nintendo 64 game first appeared back in 1999 and quickly became a fan favourite. In the original, a Pokémon photographer named Todd was summoned by the legendary Professor Oak to take quality pictures on the mysterious Pokémon Island, untouched by the outside world.
Player’s could visit different areas in their motorized, amphibious buggy, Zero-One to take pictures of the many different pokemon that lived on the island. As the player progressed, Professor Oak would reward the player with different accessories to help them to take better pictures. This gave the game a huge amount of replay-ability as you could revisit previous areas to beat your previous score and take even better pictures.
One of these such accessories, the apple, features in the footage released today for New Pokémon Snap. The apple, in the first game, could be used to attract or stun Pokémon in order to get a better shot of them with your camera. It seems that developers are certainly taking a huge amount of inspiration from the original game and improving it for a new generation.
We don’t have much to go on at the moment. However, it definitely looks like a new location that we haven’t seen before! Additionally, from the video, we can see a whole range of Pokémon from the different generations which should do much to please fans, new and old.
New Pokémon Snap also promises to deliver the chance to explore deserts, jungles and other areas just like we could in the original. This time though we will get to witness never before seen Pokémon behaviour and expressions!
The game still appears to be on rails, as far as we can see, and has lots absolutely none of it’s charm from the original game. The game is, of course, still in development and this is only the beginning. But from what we have seen so far it certainly looks like a lot of fun and certainly seems to keep the heart of the original game alive.
Unfortunately, New Pokémon Snap doesn’t have a release date just yet as it is still under development. We are holding out for more information, so stay tuned!
