It’s only been a couple of months since the release of the most recent Resident Evil title, the Resident Evil 3 remake, and we’ve already got a trailer for Resident Evil 8 and the promise of a 2021 release. Aren’t we lucky?
Read on as we take a look at what we can expect from RE8: Village.
‘His story comes to a close.’ Foreboding. The trailer features two former Resident Evil protagonists, Chris Redfield and Ethan Winters, but does not specify which, if either is on the chopping block.
It turns out Ethan and Mia have managed to settle down and get on with their lives after the events of RE7 and we’ll be returning to Ethan for RE8. If we spend most of the game playing as Ethan, he’d be the first Resident Evil protagonist to get two consecutive games in the series.
So heavily in fact, the resident evil name is second to ‘Village’ in the logo. The series is no stranger to villages housing European farming communities, that being the setting of RE4, and it looks like we’re getting more of it. The atmospheric looking village also has some distinct vibes and the feel of the trailer falls somewhere between RE7, RE4 and Bloodborne.
We get snippets of the inhabitants of the village, who range from what looks to be a young farmhand and her Father to a well-dressed vampire (maybe?) with the power to control insects. The latter has a very similar ability to Marguerite Baker, the matriarch of the Baker family from RE7. She’s also seen drinking some of Ethan’s blood, together these could suggest a return of ‘the mould’ from the previous game.
There’s been a lot of speculation online about the possible identity of a certain sunglass wearing Van Helsing type, glimpsed briefly in the trailer. A popular theory circulating is that we’re seeing the return of presumed dead RE4 character Luis Sera. And I’ve got to say, the resemblance is striking.
The eponymous village would seem to be infested with a class of humanoid beasts who are terrorising the residents. These creatures look a lot like people half-transformed into werewolves.
The very last moments of the trailer show what will most likely be the instigator for the plot of the new game. Chris Redfield, looking far more menacing than in past appearances, very coldly shoots Mia in front of an incredulous Ethan. Could Chris be the primary antagonist of RE8? Has he spent too much time with umbrella and turned evil? Or could he have his reasons? It’s worth saying that he unloads a lot of bullets into Mia’s head, a situation familiar to players of RE7 where she is infected by the mould. If that’s the case, and she is still infected, then Chris may not be the bad guy and Mia might not actually be dead. Only time will tell.
We don’t know a lot of plot details at the moment, but we’re definitely very excited for the game and to find out what happens between Ethan and Chris.
