Top 10 Coolest Dark Souls Weapons

As I’m sure you’ve already heard, Demon Souls is getting a long-awaited remake for the PlayStation 5, and in order to honour the return of the father of the Souls franchise, we thought we’d go over some of the most memorable, iconic, or downright impressive weapons from the series to get you ready to re-immerse yourself back into the dark, gothic lands of brutal bosses and untrustworthy NPCs. Here are the top 10 coolest weapons from the Dark Souls series. Be aware that there are spoilers within, so read on at your own risk.

10 . The Fume Ultra Greatsword

This giant slab of stone was wielded by the Fume Knight Raime in the Old Iron King DLC for Dark Souls 2, and if you played at the time, you’ll remember the punishing damage this weapon could put out in PvP. Seeing an invader turn a corner with this weapon in their hands was an instantly recognisable and truly scary sight, especially if you were on low health or in a precarious, hard to reach area, far from the safety of the nearest bonfire.

9. The Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords

What’s better than one giant flaming sword? I think this entry answers that question unequivocally; it’s two giant flaming swords. Introduced in the renowned Ringed City DLC for Dark Souls 3, these dual greatswords were as fun to use as they were to look at. Spinning through the air with a huge sword in either hand, ready to slam whoever or whatever was in your path, was an unparalleled joy, earning this weapon the number 9 spot.

8. The Washing Pole

First found in Dark Souls and again in both Dark Souls 2 and 3, this plus-sized katana is nothing if not iconic. In a game series where weapons being larger than your character model is nothing out of the norm, it was still bizarre to see one with otherwise normal proportions being long enough to make a javelin jealous, while still maintaining the proportions of a regular katana in every other way, especially with a name like “washing pole”.

7. The Dragon Tooth

Another weapon first introduced in the original Dark Souls as the weapon of the infamous fan-favourite NPC Havel the Rock, this giant club, like the other entries on this list, made its way to the sequels as well, which should be no surprise. As those who met Havel unprepared will tell you, he’s nothing if not durable, and his weapon takes after its master.

6. The Dragonslayer Greatbow

The third entry on this list to have been in all three games, this giant bow could knock players off their feet and, more often than not, off of ledges, making stealth invasions in Anor Londo one of the most entertaining pastimes for those blessed with good aim.

5. Friede’s Great Scythe

Now we’re getting to the really good stuff. These dual scythes could be forged from the soul of Sister Friede, one of the toughest bosses in Dark Souls 3, and it’s only right that she create one of the coolest (no pun intended) weapons. Summoning a second scythe made from ice and dual wielding to use some of the same moves as the boss you beat to get them? What’s not to love?

4. The Dragonslayer Swordspear

Not only did this weapon have a unique design, it had a unique moveset too, including the ability to summon lightning just like the hidden boss who you have to beat to get it.

The part I love the most about this weapon is the lore behind it, as it gave rise to countless theories about the Nameless King’s identity – could he be Faraam, the only other God of War mentioned in the series, or Ornstein, the famous Dragonslayer who’s armour and weapon can be found nearby, or could he even be Gwyn’s firstborn, who was stripped of his titles and his name forgotten?

As always in Dark Souls, it’s up for interpretation. Also, the King of the Storm in the first phase of the boss fight is a nod to the Storm King from Demon Souls, and let’s not forget what this list is all about; getting the hype up for that.

3. The Twin Princes’ Greatsword

Lothric and Lorian were fascinating characters with the classic twisted, sinister backstory that Souls characters so often have. The boss fight only drops one soul, which can forge a weapon of either one of the Princes, but if you get ahold of both of these weapons, they can be combined into the Twin Princes’ Greatsword, a weapon that combines the best of both of its constituents and looks badass to boot. This weapon may not be quite as iconic as some of the others on this list, but it definitely holds up in terms of style points, and as we all know, they’re the only points that matter.

2. The Black Knight weapons

Yes, all of them. You expect me to pick just one? I used both the Greatsword and the Ultra Greatsword throughout my first playthrough of Dark Souls and for that reason, they hold a special place in my heart, but of course I’m not the only one who fell in love with these enormous weapons, as they appeared in every game since the first one, and if that isn’t the mark of an iconic weapon, what is?

1. The Moonlight Ultra Greatsword

The fact this weapon takes the number one spot should be no surprise to any of you, as it truly is an icon of the series. Like many others, this blue behemoth has appeared in every Dark Souls game since the original, and it’s even legendary enough in the game world itself to have had forgeries made of it. If you still need convincing that this weapon is worthy of the number one spot, it shoots blue light out of it in a beam when you swing it. Need I say more?
