What We Learned From The PS5 Future Of Gaming Event
The day has finally arrived where we get a peek into what’s in store for the next generation of PlayStation. Let’s look at everything that was announced in today’s stream.
Grand Theft Auto 5 (Not 6)
We start with footage of Grand Theft Auto 5. After a few glamorous, yet samey shots, we get information that PS5 owners will get a FREE copy of GTA 5, enhanced for the next-gen system at launch in 2021. If that’s not enough, players on PS4 will get $1M in GTA cash every month, leading up to the launch of the PS5, starting from today!
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
It’s the game we’ve all been praying for! Anyone who has finished 2018s Spider-Man, and watched Into the Spider-Verse, will most certainly share my excitement.
Players will step into the shoes of Miles Morales, the game gave us a glimpse of his invisibility and electricity powers, it even gave us a look at the epic black and red Spidey suit! If it’s anything like the previous game, this is a title that even new players can get excited about! The release date is set for 2020.
Gran Turismo
The next game on our list is Gran Turismo, the gameplay featured a stunning set of cars tearing up an outdoor track. We get a glimpse in the driver’s seat as first-person angles pull us across the track at breakneck speed. No release date is shown unfortunately so we’ll have to wait!
Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart
Ratchet and Clank make their return, and as always, they seem to be having some trouble! Uncontrollable dimension hopping has separated the dynamic duo, forcing Clank to team up with a mysterious new character! As Rachet, players will be able to pass through dimensions at will, stringing bizarre combos together, and firing off all new weaponry.
Project Athia
From the minds of Square Enix’s new studio, Luminous Productions, we got a breathtaking first look at Project Athia. This narrative-led intro was visually incredible, showing off a wide stretch of landscape populated with dark shadowy monsters and a whole lotta fog. To top it off, the sweeping score in the background really ramped up the intensity! We’re not sure what it is, or whether it’s a secret FF game under a different name… but take our money!
Stray
Our next game starts in what looks like a world devoid of humans. We see a cat strut through a run down robot-filled, dilapidated city, in a dystopian world. As the camera follows our feline friend, we see homeless robots with rags and tattered blankets on the streets (why do robots need blankets?) robot workers, and pedestrians filling every corner of the city. This game didn’t offer us much in terms of story, but it has our attention. Stray has a 2021 release date.
Returnal
First thoughts here – that is not a real word! But once you get past this, Returnal offers an interesting idea. The protagonist seems to be stuck in a loop after visiting a planet. As it says in the trailer, she arrives, she’s attacked, she dies, rinse and repeat.
She talks about how the planet is slowly affecting her mind, it would be interesting to see if this loop has been in her head all along. It’s strange to say that, what appears to be a mash up of The Outer Worlds and Bloodborne, could be the next big title to focus on mental health. This game looks very interesting and we’ll definitely be giving it a go!
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
It’s a next-gen console from Sony, so we we’rent really all that surprised to see Media Molecule throw its hat in the ring.
Looking less Little Big Planet, and more like a Sackboy story, it’s interesting to see what new direction they’re taking Mr Sack in.
Part of me hopes they don’t take out the creation aspect of the game, but considering they’ve made the choice to call it ‘Sackboy: A Big Adventure’ and not LBP 4, makes it obvious that it’ll solely be a platform adventure game. And when you look at creation juggernaut ‘Dreams’ and how well it’s doing, MM most likely know that another title focused on ‘building whatever you want’ will divide the community.
Sackboys new game looks to be offering up new puzzles and different ways to platform. From the looks of things it will be up to 4 players solving puzzles and beating bosses! No release date for this one unfortunately but it will be one to keep an eye on!
Destruction Allstars
Our next game features some car-based destruction… Carstruction? It looks incredibly chaotic, with drivers trying to run back to wrecked cars, and those still in vehicles attempting to destroy each other with kooky, over-the-top gadgets! Not much is shown apart from some big explosions and car shattering shots! I could see this one making its way onto the Esports stage.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Kena: Bridge of Spirits looked beautiful! It seems to be a narrative-heavy title, boasting magic and spirits! While we get a lot of Tak-Esque gameplay we aren’t told much.
The teaser draws us in with incredible sound design and atmospheric visuals, solidifying its spot on everyone’s radar.
Goodbye Volcano High
There isn’t much to say about Goodbye Volcano High, it does have an incredibly interesting art design, and it offered up a very emotional intro, aside from this, we didn’t get an awful lot to go on. It’s one to keep your eye on as we’ll definitely be getting more info before its 2021 release.
Oddworld: Soulstorm
This is NOT just another return, it’s THE return! Abe is back, and it’s just his luck that the fate of his entire race is up to him! He must work to save as many Mudokons as possible or watch them all perish under his command. No release date for this one, but right now would be great.
Ghostwire: Tokyo
Ghostwire Tokyo is based in… you guessed it, Tokyo. You play as a protagonist with the power to see ghostly apparitions, and dangerous creatures hellbent on destroying Tokyo. This title looks creepy, disturbing, and it’s right up our street! The release date is 2021.
Jett: The Far Shore
Jett: The Far Shore had our attention from the minute the hand drawn artwork appeared. It then took a turn and somehow gained 110% of our attention when the trailer took us to space! With some next-level graphics! What are you Jett: The Far Shore?! Are you a humble, hand drawn adventure with cutesy art, and a story that forces us to look inside ourselves, or are you the next big FPS space shooter taking inspiration from Destiny, Mass Effect and Halo? We need to know! The release is set for 2020 so we won’t have to wait long.
Godfall
We all know about Godfall, but good god… this trailer was just incredible. Gearbox really understands us, it knows what we want to see in a gameplay trailer, the music, the combat, the over-the-top weapons, the loot, the powers, and all of it building up along with the music to finally crescendo into an epic explosion. Bravo Gearbox! Godfall is slated for a 2020 release.
Solar Ash
Another game with an interesting art style, a whole lot of mystery and intrigue. The music in addition to the art made me feel extremely uncomfortable, but, it looks interesting nonetheless! The release date of this one is 2021.
Hitman 3
The closing chapter for our clandestine killer is here! Every gamer knows who Agent 47 is, even my friend who has only ever played Candy Crush. This announcement undoubtedly shocked a lot of people. When the show seemed to be drawing to a close, in true Hitman fashion, it popped up out of nowhere, as a stealthy surprise. The scenery shown in the trailer is breathtaking, and the graphics overall are flawless! Killing people never looked so good! Hitman 3 will be arriving sometime in January 2021.
Astro’s Playroom
It looks like we’ll be paying Astrobot another visit on the PS5. Even for players that aren’t in to platformer puzzle games, it’s hard not to gasp in awe at these hyper-realistic cheeky robots. THIS. LOOKS. INCREDIBLE!
Little Devil Inside
Little Devil Inside looks as if Firewatch got a DLC for combat and odd facial expressions.
It may be safe to assume players will fill the role of the goofy faced adventurer, hunting creatures and exploring. The story of the old man running parallel with the action is certainly intriguing, we’ll be giving this a go for sure!
NBA 2K21
THE. GRAPHICS. LOOK. UNBELIEVABLE. Pelicans player, Zion Williamson gave us a stellar performance in this hyper-realistic trailer. The graphics showing off every individual bead of sweat on Williamsons forehead as he consistently dunked until snapping the hoop. I’ve not even finished 2k20 career mode, but I’d skip it for 2k21 in a heartbeat!
Bugsnax
Creators of Ocotodad have outdone themselves with this wacky title.
Adding real meaning to “You are what you eat”, Bugsnax puts you on an island where you, quite literally, become what you eat!
We’re not sure what the story behind the island is just yet, but it’s certainly intriguing. Where did these creatures come from? What are you trying to achieve? Does munching all of the food themed creatures transform you into some food Godzilla that culminates in you taking on food King Kong, or… Burger King Kong? Terrible. The game is due to release some time in 2020… Ooh what about Codzilla?
Demon’s souls
Ah Demon’s Souls, the hardest of all the Souls games. This is going to be the hardest, most frustrating, challenging, and again, frustrating game on PS5. For longtime Souls fans, the trailer was most likely a warm nostalgic blanket, quickly followed by rage inducing, searing hot flashbacks of a game that killed them over and over. We can’t wait to welcome Demon’s Souls back into our arms, to pick up where we left off in this love/ hate toxic relationship!
Deathloop
Speaking of being killed over and over, Deathloop is game based around this idea. In a game where dying will reset the day, players will be thrust into a world of desperation, fear, and revenge.
The protagonist is being hunted for sport, and not only does he have to try and survive, he has to kill 8 targets in order to break himself from this tortuous loop. Although players will learn more with every new go around, there’s also a professional assassin tracking the player throughout the whole ordeal. Deathloop showed off some great combat with some very intersting weapons and tools to take advantage of!
Resident Evil: Village
Good news for all the horror fans, this game looks terrifying, and the extremely realistic environments just extenuate the fear factor. The game is reported to maintain the first-person perspective introduced in Resi 7, meaning, players will get to feel what it’s like to harassed by mutants, beasts, and other nasty creatures!
Pragmata
A spaceman, a robot girl, a cat, awesome graphics, these are all ingredients to make the most confusing announcement trailer to date. It might just be easier to watch the video below…
Horizon: Forbidden West
HZD fans undoubtedly jumped out of their seats and punched a hole in their wall in excitement after hearing Aloys voice fade in over shots of sun drenched landscape. What more could you want from a game announcement trailer? There’s new monsters, a new threat, a new map, an interesting new narrative, and the graphics are unbelievable, those crabs look better than real crabs!
Hardware Reveal
As we get to the end of the stream, an awful lot has happened, and we’re all excited for next-gen. Just as we think the livestream is going to end… There it is! The PlayStation 5, in black and white, stood proudly with its collar up. The PS5 boast a bunch of peripherals to release along side it. Players will also get the choice between an all digital console, or one that can also take physical copies.
Although we don’t have a price yet, we’re guesstimating £599.
