Pokemon On GameBoy: A History

Pokemon has been a beloved franchise for over two decades, with countless games released on various platforms. In this article, we will compare some of the best main Pokemon games of all time and look back fondly on our childhood. Here are some of the Pokemon games that came to Game Boy and Game Boy Advanced.

Pokemon Red and Blue

Released in 1996, Pokemon Red and Blue were the first games in the series, and they revolutionized the gaming industry. Players could explore the Kanto region, catching and training over 150 Pokemon. The game introduced the concept of trading Pokemon with friends, and the idea of battling gyms to become the ultimate Pokemon master.

Pokemon Yellow

Released in 1997, Yellow follows a similar story to Red Blue but whilst also following the exploits of Red, the main character. However, this time around you get a Pikachu as your starter which follows you around and you’ll encounter Jessie and James of Team Rocket along the way. You also get the chance to take on the original Kanto starters – Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle meaning you can form a nostalgic team of pokemon in the early game. There was even a way to teach Pikach Surf and have him traverse water on a surfboard!

Pokemon Gold and Silver

Released in 1999, Pokemon Gold and Silver improved upon the success of Red and Blue. This time around, players could explore the Johto region, catching over 250 Pokemon, including new types like Dark and Steel. The game introduced day and night cycles, allowing for different events to occur depending on the time of day. Additionally, players could revisit the Kanto region and battle the gym leaders from the previous game.

Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire

Released in 2002, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire introduced the Hoenn region and 135 new Pokemon. The game introduced double battles, where players could use two Pokemon at once. Additionally, the game had weather effects, which could affect battles and the environment.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

Released in 2004, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were remakes of Red and Blue. The games featured updated graphics, improved mechanics, and new content. The games also introduced the Sevii Islands, which were not present in the original games.

In conclusion, each Pokemon game has its own unique features and strengths. For those who want to experience the roots of the franchise, Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold Silver, and Crystal would be your best bet.
