Upcoming Switch Games to Get Excited About
Since its release, Nintendo’s Switch console has proved to be massively popular and vastly versatile in its releases. From new iterations to classics such as Zelda and Mario and popular ports like Skyrim and Fortnite, Nintendo is set to release more unique titles over the next few months. Here are a few upcoming Switch games we’re excited for!
Rustler
I’m almost afraid to play Rustler because of how addictive the seemingly limitless gameplay looks. Want me to sell it to you? Medieval GTA. That’s it. You want this game. You play as Guy, a peasant in a medieval open-world. If the gameplay trailer is anything to go by, you’ll be up to an array of no-good hijinks including brawling, wreaking havoc on horseback and running away from police horses. A wonderful visual style that resembles the DS classic GTA: Chinatown Wars, also shot from an almost birds-eye view perspective, brings vibrancy to the strictly not self-serious arcade-style gameplay. Visit “Pimp a Horse” to customise your ride, engage in medieval tomfooleries like cage-fighting and jousting. Unleash carnage with fire swords, bows and arrows and Holy Hand Grenades. It’s safe to assume that Rustler is set to be a lot of good old fashioned fun.
Release: August 31st
Hot Wheels Unleashed
Back in the day we had one hundred Scalextric and other toy car racers on the PS2. It was unfortunate that few ever left pleasant tire skid marks on anybody’s memory lane. Luckily, Hot Wheels Unleashed looks like the definitive toy car racer for a new generation (and for us old people). The equation is simple: what happens when you combine an array of whacky, dynamic courses and tons of nostalgic, flaming Hot Wheels cars? You get a chaotic, relentlessly fast, rollercoaster of a racing game that encourages ambitious off-roading, risky drifting and borderline bullying of your opponents. It’s nice to see the game sticking to its roots as well, staying faithful to the iconic orange plastic race tracks instead of tarmac.
Release: September 27th
Digimon Survive
Well, we hope that this one is seen in 2021. Initially set for release in 2019, Bandai Namco ambitiously tried to bring Digimon back into the mainstream limelight with Digimon Survive, a celebration for the twentieth anniversary of the iconic anime. The gameplay sees a classic blend of strategy, role-playing and turn-based battling in an artstyle faithful to the hand-drawn original series. The story of Survive, however, is a brand new one, seeing a band of teenagers discover a new world of Digimon when lost on a camping trip. The official website states that there will be difficult decisions to make and they will affect the progression of your Digimon and the outcome of the story. Though ambiguous and continuously delayed, we’re sure that Survive will be a welcome return for the series, proving that games don’t always have to be progressive and game-changing to be fun.

Insurmountable
Rumours have it that this epic game with harsh, permadeath gameplay that mirrors the unforgiving hostility of the reality of mountaineering, could be making its way to the Switch this year. Scale three mountains as an Adventurer, Scientist or Journalist and select a route. Navigate perilous pathways through days bright and dark, weathers good and bad, tactically assessing the condition your character is in. Prepare for your journey with attributed skills and itineraries and a level-up progression system. Random curveballs are also thrown into the mix when you encounter spontaneous decisions to consider, such as whether or not to eat some unknown berries, follow some strange tracks you’ve come across or rush through “The Death Zone” as quickly as possible or slow and steadily. It looks like Mario Party meets Death Stranding meets The Forest, but with less mushroom-kingdom goodness, ghost-detecting babies and cannibals. In a good way.
Release: TBC
Garden Story
It wouldn’t be a Nintendo list without at least one adorable, wholesome entry. Garden Story is a minimal world filled to the brim with character and cuteness. You play as a grape who’s been entrusted with cultivating the local environment. This means ridding it of pests, doing favours for the locals and restoring your homeland to how it should be; natural, sustainable, cosy and thriving. From the trailer, strong characteristics of Animal Crossing are evident and even some early Pokemon, given the gorgeous pixel art and map style. We’re excited for running errands, fishing, exploring and most importantly, ticking off “playing as a grape” from the video game bucket list.
